For the 2002 FIFA World Cup, held across South Korea and Japan, numerous hotels were quickly constructed in the Sanya neighborhood of Tokyo. With the influx of foreign visitors coming to root on their national teams, a small global microcosm sprung up in each hotel. Photographer Kazuhiko Washio began interviewing and taking portraits of the tourists, capturing them outside of the fervor of the stadium, in quiet moments found often far from home.
