One of the oldest still standing Buddhist temples in Japan, Kofukuji, after a period of inactivity, still serves as an active temple today for the Hossō Sect of Buddhism. The temple grounds also host the National Treasure Museum, housing some of the temple's art collection of Buddhist art, including a set of carvings of the Twelve Heavenly Generals.
