Combining old world techniques and contemporary subjects often yields positive, if not at the least interesting, results. The effect of a technique perfected over generations with a symbol, motif, or element from the cutting edge forces a juxtaposition, bringing pause to a viewer as they try and place a piece in its appropriate era. What expectations do we put on something old, or on something brand new? Playing with a sense of belonging in time allows freedom to subvert expectations of both.
