Bingata is a form of fabric dyeing unique to Okinawa, dating back to the 1300's. Utilizing a stencil resist pattern made from a rice-based paste, intricate repeating patterns often featuring natural or animal themes are carefully applied to fabric. Due to the amount of hands on work required, the technique can notoriously laborious requiring weeks if not longer to complete a single piece.
